Delicious Bunless Hamburger

Who doesn’t love a good burger with a side of fries? Unfortunately, most take-away burgers are greasy, the patties are made with beef containing a high fat percentage and the buns are usually über-processed white bread with a nutritional equivalent to cardboard.

 

However if you make your own burger at home, the actual ingredients in it are not unhealthy. You can even go the extra mile and make it more guilt-free by discarding the processed buns and replacing them with high-fiber and nutritious grain like: pearled barley, quinoa, bulgur or cous cous.

 

This has become an instant hit in my home. Even my burger-happy boyfriend has forgiven me for messing with the sacred burger.

 

You can mix and match the ingredients with whatever you prefer or have at hand. If you wish to impress a special someone, then serve this delicious bunless hamburger with a side ofHomemade Guacamole & Sweet Potato Chips. I guarantee both of you will LOVE the combo!

 

Ingredients (serves 1)

 

  • 150 gr lean ground beef

  • 1 dl pearled barley (or grain of choice)

  • handful spinach (washed and dried)

  • 1 tomato

  • 1 egg

  • 1/2 onion (cut in rings)

  • salt and pepper

  • olive oil

  • BBQ sauce or ketchup

  • 1 or 2 slice turkey bacon (optional)

 

Method

 

  • Put the pearled barley in a pot and cook in 2 dl of water over a medium heat till grains are soft and edible (approx. 15-20 min)

  • While the barley cooks, season the ground meat with salt and pepper and kneed it well with your hands till texture is smooth.

  • Put your grill pan on the stove on medium heat. Spray with cooking spray if necessary.

  • Form meat into a ball and then on squish and form it into a patty. Make patty as wide as possible, as it might shrink a little on the pan. If the grill pan is hot now, put patty on it.

  • While keeping an eye on the patty as it grills, wash the spinach and tomato. Cut the tomato and onion into slices. Set aside.

  • Flip the patty over and on side of the grill pan add the onion rings (and the turkey bacon)to grill.

  • Heat a small pan with some olive oil, crack the egg and let it cook.

  • Flip the onion rings and turkey bacon. Check your patty’s progress, do you want it medium or well-done? Remove from heat if you prefer it to be medium.

  • Drain the excess water from the pearled barley. Put the pearled barley on a plate.

  • Remove bacon and onion rings from heat.

  • Top the barley with the spinach, tomato slices, the patty and BBQ sauce or ketchup (if using).

  • If the egg is done, place it on top of the patty together with the turkey bacon and the onion rings.

  • Enjoy!
