My 4 Favorite Fitness Apps

Looking for an app to help keep you or get you on track with your training and diet in 2015? Well then you clicked on the right post! :)

I thought I'd share my 4 favorite fitness apps that I use on a daily or weekly basis to help me stay fit. All of these apps can be downloaded to your smartphone for free and they all have a premium version you can upgrade to if you decide that you want to pay a little extra for their added benefits.

1. Endomondo

Endomondo is a Sports Tracker app that allows you to track your activities and those of your friends. You enter your height, weight and sex in "settings", then choose which type of sport you'll be engaging in and press "start". The app then uses your data and gps to track your workout and calculates distance traveled and calories burned. If you want to have more precise calculations, it is also possible to connect a heart rate monitor to this app. You can always manually pause your workout if you need a break, or you can set the app to automatically pause the timer when it detects that you are standing still; this is particularly useful for runners or cyclists.

Endomondo allows you to add and follow your friends' activities as well. You can like their latest workout, comment on it and, if you enjoy a little competition, it is also possible to challenge your friends and try to beat their best time.

To be honest, I haven't been using these social interaction options very often, since I'm more of a "loner" when it comes to working out. Since I don't have a fitness tracker, I enjoy using my Endomondo to give me an idea of how many calories I've burned, and how fast I've run or biked.

2. MyFitnessPal

I use this calorie counter app on a daily basis both on- and off-season. It's probably the most important app on my phone at the moment, since it doesn't only help me count my calories, it also helps me break-down my macronutrients (aka macros). Breaking down your macros is relevant if you are comp prepping or if you follow the IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros) flexible dieting approach.

But even if you aren't comp prepping or doing flexible dieting, you can easily use MyFitnessPal to lose a few pounds by logging what you eat during the day to give you an idea of how many calories you are consuming. I bet that it will make you think twice about eating that extra cookie and you'll be surprised by all those hidden calories you weren't aware that you were consuming on a daily basis. You can also log your water intake and you can connect your Endomondo to your MyFitnessPal so you can see how many calories you are burning compared to those you are consuming.

MyFitnessPal has a huge database containing different types and brands of foods. You can find pretty much anything in there, and if for some reason you can't, you can create a new entry and fill out all the nutritional facts yourself, or you can just quickly write in a calorie amount. The only downside of this database is that, since the users have created the entries, not every entry is accurate or comes complete with all the nutritional facts. So when you search for a food, make sure to double tap on the entry and double check that the nutriional break-down has been included.

It may seem tedious to log what you eat every day, but if your New Year's resolution is to lose weight or just eat more balanced and healthily, then logging what you eat is the only way to go. It gets easier and faster to do as soon as it becomes part of your daily routine. You can also create and save favorite foods or meals to make the process faster. Just remember, it's true that abs are made in the kitchen, because you simply cannot out-train a bad diet.

3. JeFit

JeFit is an app that allows you to create, save and track your workouts.

It has a huge database of exercises that also come with animated instructional tutorials for each exercise, in case you are in doubt of the proper techinique. So you can pick and choose exercises from the database and create a personalized workout which then allows you to customize the amount of sets, reps and resting periods for each one.

If you need a challenge, JeFit can calculate your one max rep and it also encourages you to constantly improve by suggesting you try to beat your last workout by increasing the amount of weight or reps.

Just like Endomondo, JeFit also has an interactive community where you can log on, find and follow friends, share your workouts and compare stats.

4. Swork it

Sworkit is an app that is perfect for those days when you can't make it to the gym or you need some inspiration for a good circuit training workout. You don't need any equipment, you use your own body weight and you can do it all in the comfort of your own home.

You can create and save your own circuit routines or find new challenging ones. I particularly like that you can choose which body parts you want to focus on in case you have some weak points you want to give special attention to or if you have an injury you'd rather not aggravate.

In any case, Sworkit, Endomondo, MyFItnessPal and JeFit are all great apps that I personally use and can really recommend for fitspiration, keeping track of your progress and sharing it with your friends. They are free to download and try, so I can totally recommend checking them out and playing around with them to see if they also fit your lifestyle.

Remember, the apps can be great motivators, but only YOU can make all your goals a reality, so take 2015 by the horns and get started on your fitness journey TODAY. Hope this list has been helpful, friends. Happy New Year to you and yours! I wish you all health, love and success. Thanks for swinging by my blog!
