Casper's key to weight loss success
Interview Q&A with Casper Gjede Jansen
by Yvonne Alonso
Losing the weight under the guidance of a personal trainer is only half the battle. Keeping the weight off and committing to a permanent lifestyle change is the other half of the battle which is, in my experience, the toughest part. Realistically, I can’t be there forever for my clients, so it is very important to me that I pass on as much of my knowledge to them so they can continue to live happy, healthy and active lives.
Casper Jansen is one of my rockstar clients that made zero excuses, followed my program and meal plan down to the last gram and his results were phenomenal. Casper lost 11kg in the first 10 weeks with me. He got so hooked on training that he went on to a second round of training with me to continue tightening up and gain muscle.
Casper is no longer training with me but we keep in touch. I have been so proud of him and his achievements whilst he trained under my supervision. However, nothing can make me happier and prouder than seeing my client take all the technique and nutritional advice they’ve learned and implement it in their every day lives and continue to see results.
In the Q&A below Casper shares why and how he decided personal training was right for him. He also shares his challenges and advice on how to successfully keep the weight off for good. Both Casper and I hope this post can be of inspiration for anyone thinking of starting on their fitness journey towards a happier, healthier you.
What moment or event made you realize that you needed to change your lifestyle?
I looked at myself in the mirror one morning while on paternity leave. I have never had a very thin complexion, but I had had enough! I realized I had man-boobs and that I felt forced to constantly suck in my gut to somehow stand myself. I was tired of being “the fat guy”. It was time for a change! Time for discipline and time to get rid of the gut once and for all. It was also time to find a healthy and long-term alternative to the constant snacking and unhealthy food choices.
2. How did you come to the conclusion that you needed a personal trainer?
I am by nature a persistent person and when I set a goal for myself, I will achieve it. I do, however, also posses enough self insight to admit that I needed someone, an outsider, whom I would be accountable to and who also would lend their support and have faith in me. Someone I couldn’t make excuses to. I would go All IN and seek a professional who would take me by the hand and show me the way, so I could feel better about myself, and my body. I have trained for many years and I love it, but it felt like I no longer was getting anywhere. I didn’t see any changes and that simply didn’t help my motivation.
3. How did you go about finding and choosing a trainer?
In the mornings during my paternity leave I watched the program Morgengymnastikken on DR3, simply because I thought it was a pleasant program to have running in the background. On the program I noticed one of the instructors who had a fantastically contagious positive energy, she had some really effective exercises and also seemed very nice – her name was Yvonne Alonso. I googled her, mostly just for the fun of it, to find some more info about her. When I discovered that she was a personal trainer and that she trained her clients less than a 15 minute bike ride away from my home, I decided to contact her. We met to for a consultation to see if there was chemistry, and to discuss why I sought a personal trainer. Yvonne was exactly as nice, smiling and welcoming as I had pictured. Without a doubt, SHE was the ”the one”.
4. What was the hardest part/element of your lifestyle makeover for you? How did you overcome it?
I knew that if I was to achieve my goal, that it wouldn’t be of any use to moan and complain the whole way there. It’s about adjusting your mindset. The most challenging part for me was the time-consuming “meal prepping” for my lunches. It wasn't difficult to do, I just felt like it took a lot of time. But I overcame the laziness and did it anyway because I always had my goal in the back of my mind. I WOULD accomplish this and having discipline was a part of the process which I had adjusted my mindset to. The only one I would be cheating would be myself – and ultimately I wouldn’t get anywhere. My motivation to keep on going was fueled by the daily results and that I continuously could see and feel a positive change.
5. What would you say are the key elements you took with you that help you stay fit and healthy?
The most important element I took with me after my time with Yvonne, was, without a doubt, knowledge. On health, the body, training and, last but not least, nutrition. I have felt in my own skin what an unhealthy lifestyle does to me and what a healthy one rewards me with. I’ve gotten an understanding for what type of diet is good for me and I have found that healthy balance between broccoli and burgers. Personally, having the knowledge of what is in unhealthy foods, also motivates me to stay on track with the healthy lifestyle and find alternatives to sugar – it’s much easier than you think!
6. What advice would you give others thinking of hiring a personal trainer?
Do you feel you are at a standstill and not getting anywhere with your training? Do you need someone to shed some light so you find your way? Do you wish to have some support in order to make changes in your lifestyle or do you simply want to get in shape? Then you should definitely consider hiring a personal trainer.
I can, without hesitation, warmly recommend Yvonne – because a trainer like her that’s as positive, happy, energetic and, last but not least, extremely professional, is very hard to come by. Yvonne is one of the few people that has changed my life and I will always be grateful to her for showing me the way.
